Current outlooks on the lipids of gastric membranes and beyond

Abstract

It has become increasingly clear in the recent years that the phospholipids and cholesterol are more functionally alive as the main building blocks of the bio-membranes than we previously thought. By virtue of its ability to manage local fluidity to ably support the membrane protein conformation with high degree of fatty acid precision the phospholipids demand our immediate attention in the gastric field. In addition, it plays vital role in ion transport, protein trafficking and cell signaling across the membrane. Yet during the past decades research on the lipid aspect of gastric acid secretion somehow failed to receive the kind of attention it deserves. As a result there have been a large number of voids in the field of lipid-protein interaction and gastric acid secretion that needs prompt attention. This paper reviews the current state of our knowledge in this field while attempting to point out those areas that needs further development.
